Reflection after watching my classmates speeches

Me after sitting through hours of presentations...

Just jokes! Every group had their pros and cons alike, we're learning after all. So, here, I'll discuss both! Starting with cons (what a negative nancy), and ending with the pros! (Always better to end on a positive note, no?)

Group 1

The cons I'll give about this presentation is the monotone, reading-off-a-script vibe going on. Honestly, whenever this happens I completely zone out or pray for it to be over. You have to be interested in what you're talking about, or at least be knowledgable enough that you can sound interested by looking up instead of down. Giving presentations of public speaking means taking the tips for yourself.

Then again, this group did only have chapters 1-5 that don't talk too much about going off-script. Also, we only just now started off the semester so hopefully as time goes by, the skill of engaging with your audience will actually be implemented into the presentations. But I would keep it in mind starting now to really practice that skill.

Something I liked about this group is that the powerpoint is kept straight forward. Bullet points, more often than not, are lengthy in people's powerpoints-  especially if they're not sure about what they're going to say. However, here, they kept it short and sweet. Only listing the topics or main points that they'll elaborate on which keeps everything organized. If there's too much on the screen, the audience can't have a clear enough mind to listen to your additional talking.

Important side note, the audience won't be interested anymore to listen to what you're saying if they just read it all off the screen!

Group 2

My only criticism is making sure you are mostly looking up rather than down at a script. That's honestly most of what I remember because I don't have the best memory sometimes. But I think this was the group that did a bit better on that.

The design of this powerpoint was stunning. I appreciate that the person(s) that designed the powerpoint went out of their way to make something unique, because I can tell it wasn't (or at least mostly wasn't) from some online template or design. Like Group 1, I also like how they kept the powerpoint clear and concise instead of all jumbled up.

The use of simple yet aesthetically pleasing visuals caught my attention and the conciseness kept my attention. The visuals were fun but not unprofessional or messy, it was interesting to see. And the information was kept tidy and to a minimum on the slides. Not much more to say on this group my memory is foggy.

Group 3 (Mine!)

Something I think my group could improve on is also memorizing the content and knowing it enough to speak without a script. This could help how confident we come across and make the presentation feel more fluid and engaging. I think that some of my team members did go somewhat off script actually which I was happy about!

I found it hilarious how two guys showed up in suits, it was spontaneous and captured people's attention. It was just charismatic It makes the audience interested when they are able to see the presenter's effort in the speech. I also like the concise powerpoint, and how everyone stuck to that.

From presenting this speech, I learnt a valuable thing from Professor Sherri's feedback which is that we need to move with our body in order to be more lively. I was proud of myself for speaking entirely off script! It was completely what I knew. I was a bit nervous though! Even if I don't like to admit. My voice was a bit shaky involuntarily but I was able to straighten that out a bit in.

Group 4

It could just be a me problem, but I heavily dislike the completely different designs on every slide. You can of course differentiate each slide, but everything was drastically different in the last 10 slides, it hurts my brain to look at it. You can keep it creative but also organized. It honestly looks more like the presentation IS the powerpoint, instead of it being a guide for the audience to get into what your speech is about.

Something I love about this group is they really seem like they know what they're talking about! I was most interested during this one honestly (that took a drastic turn haha, golden buzzer!). They touch on many topics, and elaborate well on them. When you see the topics on the powerpoint and the way they're organized it looks like they just know it and are summarizing which is great too!

The members spoke to fill the whole room which helped with clarity & most importantly engagement. Everything was just bright and colorful in their presentation and speeches.

Anyway, last notes about the whole project: I was very surprised by the work of the team/project leader. I have never experienced a leader in a school group actually lead, at all. It was great, she made sure to remind us of important information and to take initiative in getting us together depending on our availability for a rehearsal. I never understood if project leaders do the class work too or not or if they even are in the class I don't know how that works (I switched in late to the class maybe that's why) but it definitely helps however that works!

College certainly has been a new experience overall. Many different people, different ideas, different concepts. Entirely different schedules and assignments, and how those assignments work. I think this class is definitely part of that. So far I think it is such a relaxed class yet interesting, and I appreciate how lenient college is to completing your work over a span of a few days. Especially since life for some, like me, can get very busy. Thank you.
