Kaylee Alvarez-Reflection 1

I thought that the first presentation my group and I made was remarkably interesting, informative, and nice work done. Our assigned chapters were 9, 10, 11, 12, and were about how to deliver your speech, using language effectively, and more. Our group worked very well together and got our points across without missing any important key points of our chapters. We mentioned many different examples like how you have to dress for the occasion during a speech and I mentioned the met gala and it is a formal event, so you have to dress formally and look your best to respect your audience and yourself. I found my group to be the most informative and attentive when it came to the presentation.

All of my favorite groups that were presented were group 1, group 2, group 3, and group 4, (all of them.) They were all fun to listen to and informative delivered speeches. There are some people that presented really well. One of them being Anthony from group 1, his topic stood out to me and came very naturally since it was on how to manage nervousness and how to build your confidence, he mentioned breathing techniques and I’d also like to add onto that, in the morning, you may take a cup of relaxing tea like chamomile or peppermint tea due to research and breathe, you can also practice meditative techniques and that can also help you relax during the day of your speech presentation. Overall, I liked his topic of presentation and how everyone in group 1 presented their ideas.

I would say that group 2 was the lengthiest and most informative speech presentation based on how everyone in group 2 had a lot of information to say and on display. I liked how Melanie and Mari presented, they both used creative ideas and examples for their topics. Joshua presented at the last minute, but I almost did not notice because of how well he spoke in his presentation. He had a great speech delivery and made most of the important key points in his topic sound much simpler and broke it down for everyone to understand and what to do or avoid since he was talking about if a site’s source is credible and valid. Overall, everyone in group 2 did really well and got every point across.

My group 3, as I mentioned, worked really well together, and got our points across. We work well as a team and help each other as needed. Our group leader, Valentina really helped us in the presentation and helped me when I needed to feel better since I was feeling nervous during the presentation. She helped me organize my key points and topics and we changed a whole lot from my topics which I am very thankful that she helped me, and I was able to get the work done faster. Overall, group 3 did really well and informed our audience for our first presentation, and I would like to collaborate with them again, (even though it is already settled.)

Group 4 had a well thought out delivery speech, though I found the slides from the presentation to look a bit unorganized and it was from a problem with the file and I understood what happened to the slides, but I wanted to point it out from what I saw during their moment of delivering their topic before the group leader, Nicole told the professor what the problem was. Though, they were my favorite pictures from the slides and the structure of the presentation PowerPoint. I thought it was extremely cute and bright, which is my personal preference and was still informative throughout the presentation speech. Nicole did really well when she spoke her part, she was confident and smiling when speaking and she kept the audience engaged or at least she had me engaged. I liked the topic that Mari was speaking about and how she implemented a Greek image of Greek Philosopher, Aristotle.

Overall, my thoughts on each groups speech presentations is that I’m amazed on how well everyone did and how each person put effort and dedication onto their presentation to make it look like a good and presentable speech, not only were the presentations done really well, I noticed that most of the people that presented had a good casual-formal attire when presenting, I also made sure to look casually formal as well and that gave me a major boost when speaking my topics for the presentation. Julio and Alberto won the attire category, though. Their outfits were beautiful and very elegant for their first presentation. That means they are serious about what they do and that is a wonderful way of showing that you care about your audience and yourself. When I was speaking about my topics and it was about dressing your part, I wanted to use them as an example, but I felt a little bit nervous, so I did not get to talk about them.

My final thoughts that I would say, many of us (almost all of us) need to memorize what we are going to speak and I am saying that for myself as well because I found it a lot easier to look at my speech outline and speak from it than speak from my brain or heart. I personally did not feel nervous when speaking, I had a speech outline to guide me on what I was going to say, but I also did make sure to look at everything and everyone as well as I could to show the audience my face before looking at my outline. What I am trying to imply with that is that most of the groups after starting their topics, were already looking down and did not look up at all even to see the audience for a few seconds. It is the first presentation from this class, everyone did really great, and it’s understandable to feel nervous and look down at your outline because it helps block out the audience, but since this is Public Speaking, we have to do our best to improve on our mistakes because that will make us better future public speaking people and this class is preparing us for it and our future careers.
