Jasmine Rodriguez-Mena - Reflection #1

I was very impressed with all four groups presentation, they did an amazing job presenting, I’m especially proud of my group (group 3) for all their hard work and commitment to this presentation.

Although all four groups did an amazing job for their first presentation there are some areas that need improvement. The majority of the presenters, including myself, relied heavily on reading from script. We need to engage more with our audience and look more confident.

I particularly enjoyed presentations where the speakers engaged with the audience. For example, one person asked questions to interact with us, which kept our attention.

Group one did an excellent job explaining how to build confidence for public speaking. Their presentation on Chapter Two helped me calm my nerves for my own presentation the following day. They spoke clearly throughout, making it easy to understand their points.

Group two did a great job as well, Although some presenters were difficult to hear, their presentation was concise. When presenting they explained how to organize a speech, which was helpful when I was proofreading my own speech. They did a great job explaining and were straight to the point.

As for my group (group three), I don't want to be biased, but I think we did a great job. I felt that I got nervous and completely forgot everything I had memorized for my speech. So I had to read off my script. We managed our time well and made our presentation as complete as possible, despite one of our group members being absent but, Valentina, Our project manager did an amazing job covering for her at the last minute.

I am very thankful for our group's project manager. She was great, very attentive and gave us great advice. She made sure we were on time with our work and had everything prepared on time. She also encouraged us to practice and made sure each of our speeches wasn't too long or too short. She really helped us manage our time and I am very grateful for her. She did an amazing job and was very kind and caring.

When this project was assigned to me, I felt a lot of social anxiety. I've never done well in big groups or in front of a crowd. I've always kept to myself and never been a very social person, so I was extremely nervous. While making my slides, I was terrified, trying to think of all the ways to explain all my key points in a way that was understandable and easy to remember. After gathering all my thoughts and main ideas, I created a script and spent the next two days trying to memorize it. I practiced a lot and edited it numerous times. I even got to campus extra early so I could practice in my car, read it to my friend, and went through it about 10 times before class. It was my first college presentation, and to say I was nervous is an understatement. The moment my slides came up, I completely forgot my speech and had to read off my script. I tried to present as confidently as possible, and I think I did a good job on that part, but I was really disappointed in myself for having to read off my screen the whole time and being too nervous to look at the audience. I've now learned that for my next speech, I can just write key terms on my script to help me remember my speech, and that way I can look at the audience more and engage with them. I'm now confident in creating my next speech and presenting it, and I feel like I can do a lot better. I'm very proud of myself for being able to overcome one of my biggest fears and being able to confidently say my speech without stuttering or freezing. With the tips from the project managers in class and the chapters that were presented, I have the knowledge and now the experience to make my next speech the best it can be.

Group four was very organized and did an amazing job on their presentation as well. Their presentation was informative and straight to the point. I especially appreciated their explanation of persuasive speaking, as it was very understandable and well-organized.

It was really enjoyable to see each group's personality shine through in their presentations. Each slide reflected a little bit of each presenter's character. Some slides were simple, while others were very creative and entertaining. From each slide, you could see how each person presented themselves. For example, if they were more reserved, their slides were more basic, and if they were more outgoing, there were more details. Some presenters added humor or interactive questions, showing that they were more social and outgoing.

In a nutshell, I think all the presentations were great. Each group did an amazing job summarizing the book chapters and providing valuable information. These presentations made the book more understandable and interactive. I feel like I learned more from the presentations than I would have learned if I read the book. I really liked seeing the creativity of each group from their presentations, my favorite was group four’s presentation. I loved all the colors and pictures, it really brought the presentation to life.

I have set several future goals for my upcoming speeches in this class, as it is particularly important to me since I aspire to become a lawyer. Effective communication and public speaking skills are essential for a lawyer, so my main objectives are to deliver my speeches naturally without relying on a script and to enhance my confidence. While my confidence has improved, there is still room for growth. Additionally, I need to work on my memory as I tend to forget and stray into different topics when speaking. I am determined to refine my speech delivery to the best of my ability to ensure success in my future career. I am also impressed with my classmates' speeches and am looking forward to seeing our collective growth as a class. I have set several future goals for my upcoming speeches in this class, as it is particularly important to me since I aspire to become a lawyer.
